AAA offers tips to motorists to avoid deer this autumn – The Daily Tribune

AAA is offering tips to motorists this autumn to avoid deer on the roadways.

Especially in the midst of deer hunting season, and with the regular firearm season approaching from November 14 to 30 according to the DNR, AAA is reminding motorists it’s important to watch out for deer.

Deer frequently travel in groups, so seeing one deer cross the road could mean there are more nearby.

Here are AAA’s tips:

For motorists:

  • Stay awake, alert and sober.
  • Always wear a seat belt.
  • Be especially alert at dawn and dusk.
  • If you see one deer, slow down. Chances are there are others nearby.
  • If a crash is unavoidable, don’t swerve, brake firmly, hold onto the steering wheel, stay in your lane and bring your car to a controlled stop.

For motorcyclists:

  • Stay awake, alert and sober.
  • Slow down and be alert for deer whenever you ride.
  • Cover the brakes to reduce reaction time.
  • Use high beam headlights and additional riding lights when possible.
  • Wear protective gear at all times.
